Kitten Dumped on Busy Street During Tornado Clings to Rescuer for Comfort

On a stormy Arkansas night in May of 2020, a kitten was dumped in the middle of the pouring rain.

Just before he was washed down a storm drain, a group of good samaritans saw him and whisked him away.

Keep reading to hear how this sweet little angel was saved from a tragedy!

Tornado Warning

During a tornado warning in Little Rock, Arkansas, someone had cruelly left a kitten near a busy intersection.

Sarah Richardson, a local cat rescuer with Community Cats of Central Arkansas, was quick to arrive at the scene after hearing the news.

She got there just in time.

“It was record rainfall all night. He almost went down a drainage ditch,” Sarah said. “We rescued him from the person [who found him] immediately.”

Scurrying to Safety

Once she rescued him, Sarah briefly examined him before taking him to the vet the following day.

He was safe from the storm, but still in bad shape.

Whoever he belonged to before Sarah rescued him had clearly not taken care of him.

“He was infested with fleas and parasites and was malnourished,” Sarah shared. “We got him fixed up really quickly and we treated him.”

They estimated his age at around 7 weeks at the time of rescue.

After being treated for the parasites, they began working on his weight.

He was half the weight he should have been at his age.

He so malnourished that he weighed less than a pound!

Road to Recovery

It was slow going at first, but he began to gain weight.

“It took him about a week,” Sarah said. “He was very timid and scared of people at first.”

As he regained his health, Sarah began working to help him regain some confidence and trust!

Once he was in the clear, Sarah’s daughter named him Mr. Whiskers because of his beautiful long whiskers.

Sadly, Mr. Whisker’s was still wary of humans after being dumped on the side of the road.

Sarah was determined to make sure humans never failed him again.

Sarah and her family would show Mr. Whiskers the love and compassion he had always deserved.

Learning to Love

Mr. Whisker’s had clearly started off life on the wrong foot, by no fault of his own.

It makes sense that he didn’t warm up to humans very quickly.

The stress of his rescue had clearly taken a toll on him.

As Sarah began to gain his trust, he started warming up to the people around him.

He also began to gain more confidence and weight.

“He has gained a lot more weight,” Sarah said. “He is over three pounds now.”

Now that he was big enough, Mr. Whisker’s was ready to start meeting other kittens his own age.

Making New Friends

Mr. Whiskers was doing great with Sarah and her family, but it was time for him to take the next step toward being adopted.

Mr. Whiskers was taken to his new foster home, Community Cats of Central Arkansas.

At his new foster home, Mr. Whiskers began socializing Mr. Whiskers other kittens in the nursery.

“Weeks later now, he just cuddles with everyone all day, and he’s so playful and friendly with everyone,” Sarah said. “He never meets a stranger.”

His shyness has left, but he still prefers to keep things relaxed and quiet.

Happily Ever After

Mr. Whisker’s has regained his trust in humans and loves everyone around him.

“He’s more of a snuggler than your average rambunctious kitten,” Sarah said. “I think that’s why everyone loves him so much.”

Mr. Whiskers has been neutered and is now up to date on all his shots.

Healthy and confident, he is up for adoption now, awaiting his forever home!

About Our Hero

If it wasn’t for Sarah, Mr. Whiskers might not have survived the tornado.

Not many people would risk their own safety to rescue a kitten during a tornado warning.

While Mr. Whisker’s was one of her kitten rescues, Sarah is one of the few rescuers in Arkansas who specializes in rescuing adult cats, elderly cats, and cats with special needs.

Sarah is committed to giving a second chance to cats that other rescuers turn down.

Sarah is entirely self funded. If you would like to help, please click here to donate food and supplies directly to her from her Amazon wishlist.

If you would like to donate toward a cat’s medical treatment, please click here.

At a small cost, you can help Sarah continue to rescue cats that would otherwise be neglected.

Hi. Love the crocheted ears for the beautiful stray. The human that did that deserves many blessings and a big old hug.
