I’m sure you’ve noticed cats prefer the company of some people over others. They certainly pick favorites!
There’s always one person that cats like to be around the most – but the question is, how do they choose their favorite person?
Food
Food is the way to anyone’s heart, and cats are no exception! Cats favor the person that feeds them the most.
Now this doesn’t mean you should start feeding your cat more food to compete with someone else in your family – that’s not healthy for the cat.
It just means that cats are more likely to appreciate the person that feeds them consistently.
Attention
It’s a huge myth that cats only want to be alone and use us for food and shelter.
In fact, a study posted in the journal of Behavioral Processes suggested that cats care about human company more than food! That being said, it’s important to give them attention.
Did you know cats only meow to talk to humans? That’s right, meowing is a special way to communicate with you. So if your cat meows, it has something to say!

Play Time
A healthy cat needs to be active. Playtime with their owner is a bonding experience. Use toys to stimulate your cat’s senses and play games with them.
Simply giving them toys doesn’t count as play time. They want you to play too! Using a laser pointer, rolling a ball, or throwing play mice around are great play time ideas.

Petting
Some cats love being pet and others aren’t a huge fan. What’s your cat’s love language? Do they like to sit on your lap and be pet or do they simply like being close to you? Whatever it is, make sure your cat’s needs are met.
Trust
It takes patience to earn a cat’s trust. Their very cautious and wary of changes in their environement. And they don’t like feeling pressured.
For example, it’s normal for an adult cat that’s been adopted from the shelter to take some time warming up to you. In time, they’ll come around.

Personality
Ultimately, a cat’s social tendencies depends on its personality. Some cats are skittish and don’t like being social. These cats will favor the person that doesn’t try to corner them.
On the other hand, some cats love being the center of attention. These cats will favor someone who seeks them out.
Ultimately, cats pick their favorite person on their own terms. Not all cats want attention in the same way.
If you you’re trying to win over a cat, observe your cat’s routines and learn to give it attention and love the way it wants to receive it.

My Prada adopted me. She was unsocial and PetSmart was going to turn her loose, but she came right over to me and started purring and bumping her head into me. It was love at first sight (for both of us).
