Exploits Valley SPCA had seen many kittens pass through its doors, but perhaps none as determined as Sugar, an adorable and strong-willed grey kitten.
He initially arrived at the shelter with his other siblings, but staff quickly realized he was different.
Besides his big personality, Sugar also had a respiratory virus that required extra care.
So while his siblings quickly found their forever homes, Sugar remained behind.
As he received treatment, he came to a conclusion: he would choose his new owner. But who would he choose?
Sugar chose Glen, a shelter veteran of more than 30 years who cleaned Sugar’s room.
Whenever Glen came in, Sugar became excited and began meowing at him.
He would continue meowing until Glen finally came over to play with Sugar and cuddle him.
With decades of experience under his belt, Glen was used to falling in love with animals at the shelter.
But he’d always helped other adopters find their new best friend, rather than adopting any of the cats or dogs himself.
At first, he was determined to do the same for Sugar.
The rambunctious kitten loved everyone at the shelter, and was always willing to have a play session.
He was even talkative with some of the other workers and a few shelter visitors.
But Sugar saved his best conversations for when Glen was near.
He loved being around Glen, and the feeling was mutual.
Eventually, Glen admitted that he loved Sugar too much to not take him home.
To Sugar’s delight, Glen filled out the application form and made it official.
“Sugar officially talked his way into a home,” the other staff joked.
They offered their congratulations, which almost couldn’t be heard over Sugar’s happy meowing.
Since then, Sugar has settled in well in his new home. He loves playing with Glen’s other cat, receiving ear scratches, and snuggling.
Glen said that Sugar is still just as vocal, but that he wouldn’t want it any other way.
Glen and Sugar’s story is proof that you don’t choose a cat – a cat chooses you!

When I first met my rescue kitten Tipper she immediately came to me and started rubbing on my leg. I reached to pet her and she was purring her little heart. I like to think she picked me before I picked her. ❤ ❤ ❤

We cat dads love our kitties to no end. This is a great story and it's a no brainer that Sugar adopted Glen. Live long and prosper, both of you.

Sometimes, a cat knows just who it wants to be his slave. My cat Tabbyreached her paw out of her cage and pulled me to her! That was 8 years ago!
